History of Golf

Golf is a sophisticated game played with exquisite skill and expertise. The game of golf has traveled a long way from being the leisure entertainment, it is now one of the spectator’s game. Golf requires handling of a ball by a club. The player has to send the ball into the holes in a golf course. Knowledge on history of golf will make your understanding of golf better.

The history of golf does not have a crystal clear beginning, the origin of the game of golf is not exactly known. Some claims the origin to be Scottish, some Chinese and some thinks the origin of golf is Dutch. The most popular theory is of Scottish origin. This theory states that golf originated during 1100 in Scotland. A game like golf is mentioned as being played in 1297 in Loenen aan de Vecht, a city in Netherlands. This game was played by the Dutch people with a leather ball and a stick. In the Chinese book of “ Dongxuan Records” a game similar to golf is mentioned.

The modern game of golf is Scottish in its origin. The game of golf had been mentioned in two Scottish statutes prohibiting the practice of “gouf”. This “gouf” is considered the predecessor of “golf”. Though some people think that “gouf” refers to a different game , which resembles field hockey, hurling or shinty more. In 17th century in Netherlands a game akin to golf was played, using a club to put the ball into a hole. The word “golf” is derived from the Dutch word “ kolf”, which means “ stick”. With increase of trade in continental Europe the game of golf did spread too.

Golf courses are areas where golf is played. The Old Links, located in Musselburgh Racecourse is the oldest golf course in this earth. In 1567, Mary, the Queen of Scots played golf here. Evidences show that during 1672 golf was played here. Today golf courses have 18 holes but earlier golf courses had 9 holes. Even today there are golf courses with 9 holes.

Golf balls have become better during the 19th century. Golf balls have dimples to decrease the amount of aerodynamic drag. The wooden golf tee was invented during 1930s. Then in 1970s titanium and steel replaced wood heads. Graphite heads came during 1980s.

With a rich history the game of golf is moving towards a bright future.
