Golf is a game exuding elegance and sophistication. This game requires exquisite skill to succeed. This game requires getting a ball in the holes with the lowest possible strokes in the golf courses. Golf is a unique game, which is not played in a standard area.

Golf is played on individual golf courses, each having individual design and consisting of 9 or 18 holes. “Rules of Golf” defines golf as “playing a ball with a club from the teeing ground into the hole by a stroke or successive stokes in accordance with the Rules.” Golf is a spectator game with several amateur and professional tournaments happening in many regions throughout the world. Some of the well known golf players in the world are Annika Sorenstam, Jeev Milkha Singh, Jack Nicolaus and Tiger Woods.

The first mention of golf is as a forbidden game on a Scottish statute dating back to the year 1457. The game was mentioned as “gouf”, which has been derived probably from “ goulf”, a Scots word. The word “goulf” is derived from “ kolf”, a Dutch word.

The history of golf is shrouded in debate. The origin of the game of golf is debatable. The origin can be Scottish, Dutch or Chinese. Most of the people accept that the game originated during 1100s from Scotland. The game of Golf was mentioned in Loenen aan de Vecht in Netherlands in 1297 on 26th February. This game was played with aleather ball and a stick by the Dutch. A similar game is mentioned in a Chinese book, “ Dongxuan Records” during 11th century.



The Musselburgh Racecourse’s Old Links is the oldest golf course in this world. From evidences it is known that the game of golf was played in this course in 1672. In 1567 Mary, the Queen of Scots played golf here.
