Lee Trevino

The popular professional golfer of America, Lee Buck Trevino, has been a golf icon for the Mexican Americans since ages. Often known as “Supermex” and “The Merry Mex”, the famous golfer Lee Trevino was born in Dallas on the 1st of December in 1939. Born to Mexican parents, Trevino, never getting the chance to know his father and was raised by his grandfather and mother and spent his childhood by going to the school and working. In fact, he took a job in the Dallas cotton fields when he was only five.

Lee Trevino got acquainted with golf for the first time when he got an old golf club and some stale golf balls from his uncle. From then onwards, he started spending his spare time creeping into the local country clubs for practicing golf. He started working as a caddie at one of the golf courses in Dallas when he was eight and after few years he was forced to leave the school when he was at the eighth grade and work at the golf course for earning more money. In spite of working as a caddie and a shoeshiner, and earning 30 dollars every week, Lee managed to improve himself in golf as he continued to practice golf with his old clubs at the golf course. Each day after he was through with his work, he practiced golf and hit 300 balls per session. When Lee was seventeen he enlisted himself in the United States Marine Corps and spent 4 years there. He played golf with the officers of Marine Corps during the last months (almost eighteen months) of his service there and according to Trevino it was these games that helped him to get promoted as a sergeant at the Marine Corps.

After leaving the Marine Corps, Lee Trevino continued playing and shot a score of 283 in 1967, the year he started playing for the PGA Tour. He was awarded with $6,000 for being the fifth to finish and as a rookie he was awarded $26, 472. He won the US Open in 1968 and was the winner at the PGA Tour for 29 times. In 1971, Trevino won the US Open, the Canadian Open and The Open Championship. He was also awarded with the Hickok Belt in 1971. Lee Trevino was injured at the 1975 Western Open shortly after he won the PGA Championship of 1974. A spinal disk which was damaged had to be operated out from his back and due to his back problems his playing golf was hindered. His last important win was the PGA Championship of 1984. Lee Trevino represented the Unite States for six times in the famous Ryder Cup and was the winner of the Vardon Trophy for five times.
