Born in Pennsylvania’s Latrobe, this famous American golfer was given the lessons on golf by his father, the greens keeper and head professional at the Latrobe Country Club. He served there for almost 3 years during which he continued practicing golf and in 1954 won the US Amateur Championship. This win compelled him to opt for pro tour and he took his newly-wedded wife Winifred Walzer for traveling the circuit in 1955. He was also the winner of the Canadian Open in 1955 during his rookie season and improved himself for the coming seasons. Through rewarding business ventures and his strong personality, this popular American golfer succeeded in bringing out golf from the high-class country clubs among the common masses of America.
His appeal was an important factor in making golf a popular television event during the 1950s and 1960s. With his victory at the Masters in 1958, Arnold’s position as one of the famous golf-stars was secured, Mark McCormack being his first client. The position of the US players for The Open Championship was also strengthened by Arnold by his consecutive wins at the Open. The major championships won by Arnold Palmer include:
- US Open - 1960
- The Masters – 1958, 1960, 1962, 1964
